Update: Mexico City/Puebla Earthquake

Journey Mexico – Mexico City/Puebla Earthquake Update, September 20, 2017 3:00 PM

Yesterday, at 1:15 PM local time, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck outside the city of Puebla.  Mexico City, 100 miles to the north, experienced tremors measuring up to 6.0.  Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this event.

At the time, Journey Mexico’s staff was in Mexico City returning from our annual retreat in Guanajuato / San Miguel de Allende to our regional offices in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico City and Cancun.  With the Mexico City airport closed, and many services temporarily interrupted in the Capital, it took over 24 hours to finally arrive safe and sound in our respective homes today.  We appreciate all of the inquiries into our safety and your patience in our delayed responses.

Journey Mexico’s clients travelling in Mexico are safe and our operations staff is in direct contact with each client.   In addition, our staff, suppliers, partners, families, and offices are unharmed and safe from imminent danger.   We will continue to work diligently to gather information and provide accurate and current updates.  We thank our many friends from around the world for your kind and genuine support for us and our beloved Mexico.

Below follows information on the affected areas and how it may impact travel; we’ve also provided options for donations to help those impacted by the earthquake.

Mexico City:

Mexico City Airport:  Fights are operating in both terminals with slight delays and some cancellations.

Terminal 1 is open and operating at 80%.  The damage reported is superficial; runways are unaffected.

Terminal 2 is operating at 80% capacity due to damage to the exit road leaving the departures area. Aeroméxico is not selling tickets directly in the terminal; tickets need to be purchased online or via their call center.  The airline’s personnel and administrative staff are working directly with passengers to expedite the check-in process.  Service is expected to return to normal in the coming days; we will provide updates as we know more.

Roads / Traffic Signals:  There are road closures that are interrupting normal traffic flows.  Traffic signals have resumed normal operation in many areas, but are still not fully operational in all parts of the city.

Water / Electricity: Water and electricity has been restored to much of the city; however, there are still areas affected by power outages.

Hotels:  All but one of Journey Mexico’s hotel partners are fully operational and have reported little to no damage.  Hotel La Valise will temporarily cease operations—with no visible damage, they will reopen after a thorough review of the historical hotel’s infrastructure.

Sites of Interest:  Many sites have closed for the day to assess the impact of the earthquake. As we receive more information, we will update this status report.

Puebla:

Puebla Airport:  Fully operational, no damage to terminal or runways.

Roads / Traffic Signals:  There are road closures that are interrupting normal traffic flows.  Traffic signals have resumed normal operation in many areas, but are still not fully operational in all parts of the city.

Hotels:  All Journey Mexico hotel partners in Puebla are fully operational and have reported only minor damage except for the Hotel Casona de la China Poblana, which has temporarily closed and is expected to re-open in one week following a thorough review of the historical hotel’s infrastructure.

Sites of Interest:  Damage has been reported at some of the city’s historical buildings and churches.   Most sites have closed for the day to assess the impact of the earthquake.  As we receive more information, we will update this status report.
